Actually, if you're on a self-hosted Wordpress blog, there's a plug-in by the name of "Wordpress Database Backup" that AUTOMATICALLY sends a .sql file of my database every Monday to my Gmail address. I could configure it to be more often if I wanted to, but I'm not a high-volume blogger, so weekly back-ups are just fine for me.

It helped me the other day when something went screwy and WP couldn't see my db. I just re-created things and everything was Kosher.

You can easily backup your posts, comments, custom fields and categories by using the Export option on the Manage tab in the WP admin area. It saves an XML file that can be re-imported from the same menu.

It makes sense to also backup:

    1) Your theme folder
    2) Images used in posts
    3) Plugins

    Cheers,
    Steve.

Steve, thanks - yes the theme is a big on since, even if it's a template, you've probably spent a fair amount of time hacking little tweaks to it.

    Adam,

Thanks I will check that plug-in out - I'm for anything that automates a process.

    Andy,

I hope you're not speaking from a bad experience!

For those of us on Blogger, CodePlex Blogger Backup by Greg Duncan is great. He's very accessible and always adding new functionality.

Lisa, Thanks for the Blogger tip, didn't mean to be noninclusive.

Businesses (whether blogs, or non-internet-based businesses) live or die by their data. Losing everything could amount to losing everything. I prefer off-site backups, as they protect against something catastrophic happening in the office / home.

The backup isn't just good for backups alone - it's also how you can move to another web host. I just signed up for HostMonster and had 3 outages (that I know of) in 3 days. So I'm moving my wordpress site to another host.

The MySQL backup is ESSENTIAL for moving the site.

I never considered backing up my blog. I'm using shared web hosting and Wordpress so I don't see why I can't make this happen. If any of you think it's impossible, please let me know before I try it and find out this for myself.
